Movies of 2019

  1. Bird Box - Tense, amazing acting, social commentary, homages. It lived up to the hype!

  3. Avengers: Age of Ultron - nowhere near as much fun as The Avengers.
  4. Spider-Man: Homecoming - Great fun despite the lack of a bigtime villain.
  5. Avengers: Infinity Wars - Action-packed, decent humor early on, but lacks depth.
  6. Annihilation - Trippy, but wondering if it is really as shallow as Ex Machina

  37. The Emperor's New Groove - Fun Disney film. Familiar funny voices make it better.
  38. First Man - Exceptional look at Neil Armstrong, the man, and the struggle. Foy is superb!
  39. Hold the Dark - Consistently misses the mark. Riley Keough needed a bigger part.
  40. The Innkeepers - Ti West norms: Bad direction, bad writing, bad story.

  43. Mandy - Over-hyped Nic Cage horror flick that tries to look unique, but fails miserably

  62. Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen's music is the star in flawed film that feels like a TV docudrama.

  64. The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie - My least favorite Bunuel to date, but not bad.

  71. The Silence of the Lambs - Hopkins gets much of the credit, but is Foister's performance #1?
  72. The Highwaymen - Bonnie and Clyde pursued by Harrelson and Costner. Good fun!
  73. A Bittersweet Life - Good, but not great. Expected more from Jee-woo Kim!
  74. Logan Lucky - Riley Keough is the only reason to watch this.
  75. Mayhem - Fun action/comedy/horror with Steven Yeun and Samara Weaving.
  76. Infernal Affairs - The much better original of the Scorcese remake, The Departed.
  77. Phantasm: Ravager - Atrocious from start to finish. A silly addition to the franchise.
  78. Clerks - It's been a long time since I've seen it and it's still one of the greatest comedies ever.
  79. Death House - Great concept and an all-star cast are wasted on purposely being a B-movie.
  80. Suspiria (2018) - On par with the original but for completely different reasons. Dakota shines!
  81. Chris D'Elia: Man on Fire - Tells a joke, then builds on it, ending just at the right time on each.
  82. Two Graves - I watched it for Katie Jarvis, the most underutilized actress ever! Flimsy!
  83. Chris D'Elia: Nonstop - 30-minute set which hits often. Good fun!

  99. Ju Dou - Beautiful cinematography, gripping story, but falls apart slightly at the end.
  100. Japon - Wonderful story ruined by animal cruelty and an awful ending.
  101. Glass - Better than Unbreakable, but not Split. McAvoy was brilliant. Needed more Anya-Joy!

  111. This Sporting Life - Harris and Roberts dazzle under Anderson's deft touch and style.
  112. The Poughkeepsie Tapes - Different, but not different enough. Found footage never works.

  114. Revenger - Action-packed Korean film entertains despite cliche-filled plot.
  115. Furie - The all too familiar nad guy/girl turned good, kidnapped kid, but with super fights!
  116. Ikiru - Age has made me appreciate Shimura's performance and Kurosawa's brilliance more.
  117. High Life - Claire Denis directing Robert Pattinson is enough, but there's so much more.
  118. Three Different Doug Stanhope Specials - Amazing!
  119. 7 Assassins - The title is a little misleading, but it's slightly better than I anticipated.
  120. Across 110th Street - Had to revisit this gritty classic. Despite amateurish feel, it still works!
  121. Loving Vincent - Amazingly beautiful and an artistic masterpiece. So much effort and love.
  122. Loving Vincent: The Impossible Dream - Fascinating! So wonderful seeing dreams attained.
  123. The Wolf Mountains - Short, beautiful, and at times educational documentary. Well worth it.
  124. Hanna - Series doesn't quite reach the levels of the movie, but charisma between actors works.
  125. Mindhunter - Revisited the entire first season in anticipation of Season 2. Loved it again.
  126. Colin Quinn: Red State Blue State - Brilliant, but scary when a comedian gets it more.
  127. Lady Snowblood - Revisited so I could set up the sequel. So few knew what Tarantino did.
  128. Lady Sbowblood: Love Song of Vengeance - pales in comparison, but still fun
  129. They Shall Never Grow Old - Impressed by the effort, but the same impact as in B&W.
  130. We Have Always Lived In The Castle - I think my expectations were way too high
  131. Mindhunter Season 2 - Nearly as good as Season 1, with a slight let down in the finale.
  132. Jim Gaffigan Quality Time - Gaffigan's first standup act on Prime has very few laughs.
  133. Avengers Endgame - Possibly the worst of the MCU and definitely worst Avengers film.

  135. Hotel Artemis - Hard to believe Jodie Foster did this one. Abysmal.

  137. Dave Chappelle: Sticks and Stones: Epilogue - Must see
  138. The Reflecting Skin - Goes for Malick or Haynes beauty, but the story is a dud.
  139. Project Gutenberg - Will draw a "usual" comparison, but overly long for a single twist.
  140. Trevor Noah: Son of Patricia - Excellent storytelling, but at times the comedy lags.
  141. The Dark Crystal - I tried twice, but couldn't get through it.
  142. Bubba Ho-Tep - One of the worst movies I've ever seen. Sorry, Bruce Campbell fans!

  145. Godzilla 2: King of the Monsters - Didn't think the sequel could be worse. I was wrong.
  146. Colin Quinn: Mew York Story - So good I had to revisit.
  147. Cold War - Pavel does it again. It's no Ida, but it's close. Kulig is mesmerizing.
  148. True Detective: Season 3 - Acting is very good, especially Dorff, but way too convoluted.
  149. Searching For Ingmar Bergman - Pales in comparison to Trespassing Bergman.
  150. Oharu - Mizogushi's tale is so beautifully shot and despite some lags, poignant and powerful.
  151. Violent Cop - Early "Beat" Tikano. Feels repetitive, but also influential.
  152. Sound and Fury - Animated apocalyptic take. Beautiful, but unmemorable.
  153. X-Men: Apocalypse - One of the better superhero franchise sequels I've seen. Minus Isaac!
  154. The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice - Ozu's simple tale is slow, but powerful ending.
  155. What Did The Lady Forget - Early Ozu is a glimpse at how simplicity can be wonderful.
  156. 31 - Rob Zombie proves, once again, he should stick to music. Took me 3 attempts to finish.
  157. Lady Macbeth - Florence Pugh is amazing, as always! A different look at the period.
  158. Shin Godzilla - So much social commentary it feels like a documentary with Godzilla.
  159. Criminal: UK: Edgar - David Tennant added to it, but nicely done, if not a bit of the norm.

  161. Deadpool 2 - Far better than the original in every way.
  162. The Game Changers - Veganism is showcased in a positive light, but who doesn't know this?

  165. X-Men: Dark Phoenix - One of the weaker superhero films in recent memory.
  166. OldBoy - Had to rewatch the original. One of my top 25 all-time, still!!!
  167. Kingpin - Was in the mood for a familiar old laugh.
  168. Rounders - Has me itching to play Texas Hold'em again.
  169. Shark Night 3D - This was about as good as the title suggests. Stay for the credits!
  170. White: The Melody of the Curse - Oddly filmed about cursed KPop song. Didn't work at all.
  171. Summer of 84 - Well done, if not predictable and simple.
  172. Us - Blunt, simply stated metaphors throughout; from the title to the poster, to the film.
  173. Midsommar - Is it a horror film, a breakup film, or a slightly misogynistic view of dating?
  174. Unbelievable - Unflinching drama covering rape, reaction, and rape culture. Carefully done!
  175. Master Z Ip Man Legacy - Fun, over-the-top action, plus a beautiful trio of co-stars.
  176. Iliza Shlesinger: Unveiled - Not her best, but still some outrageously funny bits.
  177. Game of Throne Season 1 - Softcore porn or fantastical version of European history?
  178. Zodiac - Yes, again. Still amazing.

  180. Blood and Black Lace - Bava's masterpiece is wonderful in what it was and what it created.
  181. The Garden of Words - Japanese anime is so incredibly beautiful, despite abrupt, odd finish.
  182. Game of Thrones Season 2 - Very dull, but the coming season's reputations have me intrigued.
  183. Game of Thrones Season 3 - Wow! The best season so far and by far.
  184. Spiderman: Far From Home - Silly from beginning to end, but the side stories are a ton of fun.
  185. Noma - Documentary about the "best" restaurant in the world. The chef seemed like a dick!
  186. Game of Thrones Season 4 - A bit of a letdown based on the fact it's viewed as the second-best.
  187. Michelle Wolf: Joke Show - Cringe-worthy and vulgar, just the way I like it.
  188. Game of Thrones Season 5 - Comes very close, if not better than Season 3.
  189. Game of Thrones Season 6  - Battle scenes are insane, but I fear it's getting too crazy

White Privilege

This was a post I wrote on Facebook after surprisingly not seeing any moaning about the Documentary by Jose Antonio Vargas, titled White People Dayyum! I just scrolled my timeline and not a single white person got their feelings hurt by White People. I unfortunately haven't seen it, but the number of fake accounts that popped up on twitter, tells me it was a damn good show. Here's the thing. If someone of color aka non-white says "White Privilege," are you offended? If you said yes, then you are exhibiting white privilege. It has nothing to do with how hard you work or study, how you stayed out of trouble, because here's the thing, that is entirely the point. Somewhere out there, there are 100 Black, Spanish, Native American, Arab, Asian, who worked and studied as hard as you and never got in trouble, but they don't have what you "earned" or achieved. Stop looking at the one person you know who isn't white that achieved as your benchmark. Loo...

Quickie Review - Finding Vivian Maier

While I thoroughly enjoyed the film, especially the first 15-20 minutes, I was a little bothered by the way the film played out. The interviews with the clearly disturbed brother, sister and the mother, who obviously, was in for a cut, didn't need to be in the film. Then the woman who suggested abuse, yet seemed to have her life defined by Maier, as she tried to muster every ounce of emotion and fake guilt. Her friend, more than happy to be party of the charade. People who talk about abuse for the first time, usually don't do so on camera. The fact these scenes were so prominent, shows that they felt wronged that they were not rewarded. Maloof on the other hand, seems to disappear from the documentary during this part, almost hiding away from the fact, he went from complete praise, to even making money off of her, to destroying her personal legacy. He almost mentions the family of boys taking care of her rent, as an afterthought. Her burial spot, never shown, yet a video of her...

If You Listen To One Speech - Lana Wachowski

http://www.rollingstone.com/movies/videos/lana-wachowski-opens-up-about-difficult-past-and-attempted-suicide-20121024 Today I saw a link to a video for a speech by Lana Wachowski.  The last name rung a bell, but I could't put my finger on it. Lana, used to be Larry, one of the writer, director, producers of the Matrix trilogy, V for Vendetta and the upcoming Cloud Atlas.  Lana is transgendered and has "come out" as a woman.  She was being honored by the Human Rights Campaign. I didn't know what to expect when this broad woman with crazy hair and a raspy voice began to speak.  She began with the usual pleasantries and told of her hair dresser. She then tells of her desire to be a quiet person and how hard the success of the Matrix movies made this.  The first ten minutes is telling of how she's not quite ready to be this spokesperson.  Then she speaks about the new movie Cloud Atlas and reveals the heart of the movie and this speech. She states,"The resp...
