I work in a job where many different things happen every day. I work with kids, so this is an understatement. That being said, I also work in a place where certain things, not pertaining directly to the kids, MUST happen every day. Their completion is not production, but a necessity. So here's my issue. There's this idea that if there are ten employees working, for there to be 100% production, each person must do 10%. This, in fact, is completely false, as is proven by the fact that yesterday, 100% of the production was achieved, despite 80% of it being done by three people. Production at my job never changes, it's the efficiency that does. Here's where it gets confusing. A lot of people still think if they do 10% of the work and 100% of the work is achieved, they've done their part. The problem is, for one to be efficient, they must individually give 100% and if everyone gives 100%, there will be 100% production in a 100% efficient manner. This is what we call a fantasy.
The problem with jobs where 100% production is required, is that procrastinators, lollygaggers, the lazy, and the tardy, create an inefficient workplace. This sounds like the end of the world but simply put, it simply means, those others are required to give more than 100%, which is a strain both mentally and physically, and something which over time, destroys one's desire.
I come from a different generation than my coworkers. I learned early on that to be efficient, you must take care of your personal business on personal time. You create workplace friendships through mutual respect and when they grow, you get there earlier and leave later, to spend out of work time with these people. The idea one can have a social relationship while working is also a fantasy. It can happen, but not without efficiency and, in the end, production suffering.
Am I angry? No. I have a job to do and I do it. I love working with kids, but herein lies the problem with inefficient people. If I and a small group of others are covering them for what must be done, then I am not spending as much time with the kids, which is not only my priority, but my passion.
