#100DaysOfHopper Day 70-71

Day 70: While I don't expect a response, I have a very simple question. How does anyone watch TV anymore? I've been without TV for almost two years, maybe three, I honestly can't remember. Aside from movies and sports, I could care less about most of it. Even when I did have a TV, aside from the the aforementioned, I only watched Criminal Minds, Jon Stewart and cooking shows. Occasionally I'd watch BBC news or Craig Ferguson, but this was about it.

Recently, I've been spending some time up at my father's house and have realized the horror that is today's television. There are literally 700 channels and not one decent thing to watch. Aside from the World Cup, Wimbledon, a half a Red Sox game and Jon Stewart, I've watched three or four movies and a few Will & Grace repeats. I can't even stomach the other stuff.

Can someone tell me what you find entertaining about today's television? The reality shows are a complete insult to anyone with a kindergarten education or any self respect. The comedies are so painfully dull and unfunny, I'm embarrassed to be around people when they pull the "did you see last night's episode' water cooler BS while out in public. The dramas are all the same and just recycled crap from the last forty years. I just don't get it.

I also don't get how someone can watch a show like the Big Bang Theory, which cleverly has the one ditsy female cast member sleeping with every single character, but has her making fun of the four geniuses, so it's OK. The stereotypes I see people so angry with on social media are the same ones supported and portrayed on your favorite television shows. Apparently Zombies love dark meat, because I've seen about two black guys on Walking Dead and that's only because they were on The Wire and they are trying to increase viewership. Sons of Anarchy? Now there's a redneck middle American suckfest (not a word). Same shit, different week.

Why do we accept such mediocrity when other countries are pushing out brilliance. You know, the Office, House of Cards, etc etc....all foreign shows, revamped and suckified (also, not a word) to cater to our dimwitted standards. Even out movies suck. We're putting out TV movies like Sharknado and it's the most popular thing ever. I'm all for relaxing the mind, but why not do it with a show about meerkats, how to cook roadkill or even a classic comedy?  Why does our relaxation always have to involve turning our brains off? Trust me, most people I know can't reach the on switch. #100DaysOfHopper

Day 71: I'll keep this simple. Recently, the Riverdale and Woodlawn contingent has been calling people out for simply dumping water on their head and not donating. They've also ramped it up a bit by saying the website and stressing that awareness is great, but helping these two families is imperative and that means money. I don't know how the two families are working the donations, but I do hope a good portion is going to them personally, because if anything they deserve to enjoy life to the fullest during this time.

I do not want to be a downer, but how may people dumped the water on their head knowing that to date there is 0% chance of survival? Think about that. If you had a loved one with this horrible disease, would you want them to have something extra to have a better end? Would you want to reassure their families that they will be taken care of? I don't these families financial status and frankly it's irrelevant. Give directly to their funds. I contacted the ALS organization and they told me that all fundraisers that they run have to be approved by them. I know http://www.quinn4thewin.com/ is, but couldn't confirm a website for Anthony Senerchia. If anyone has that info, please feel free to leave it in the comments and I will add it to this post.

I'm all for a cold shower and I've taken many.....thank you "....," but this is serious and I hope wish these families the best and money just might buy a little happiness this time around. I'll forgo my usual ending as this isn't about me. #Quinn4theWin #AnthonySenerchia

White Privilege

This was a post I wrote on Facebook after surprisingly not seeing any moaning about the Documentary by Jose Antonio Vargas, titled White People Dayyum! I just scrolled my timeline and not a single white person got their feelings hurt by White People. I unfortunately haven't seen it, but the number of fake accounts that popped up on twitter, tells me it was a damn good show. Here's the thing. If someone of color aka non-white says "White Privilege," are you offended? If you said yes, then you are exhibiting white privilege. It has nothing to do with how hard you work or study, how you stayed out of trouble, because here's the thing, that is entirely the point. Somewhere out there, there are 100 Black, Spanish, Native American, Arab, Asian, who worked and studied as hard as you and never got in trouble, but they don't have what you "earned" or achieved. Stop looking at the one person you know who isn't white that achieved as your benchmark. Loo

11 Rules of Life - Bill Gates?

I read this on Facebook this morning.  A friend had posted it and said that every child should have to receive this. I of course read it and started to think.  I immediately wondered who really wrote this, as I rarely see things like this attributed to the proper person.  I immediately found it was written by Conservative Charles J. Sykes when he wrote a book about how America is dumbing down our youth.  I read it twice and started to wonder how true it was.  Below is a link to the actual picture I saw. So let's look at each of the rules and analyze them. Rule 1: Life is not fair — get used to it! - Life is not fair in that we are not all afforded the same opportunities based on race, creed, color, socio-economic background, but in general, those who are afforded the same opportunities to succeed are very often rewarded for their individual efforts.  Sure there may be underlying circumstances, but hard work is proven to pay more often than not and those who strive for succ

Quickie Review - Finding Vivian Maier

While I thoroughly enjoyed the film, especially the first 15-20 minutes, I was a little bothered by the way the film played out. The interviews with the clearly disturbed brother, sister and the mother, who obviously, was in for a cut, didn't need to be in the film. Then the woman who suggested abuse, yet seemed to have her life defined by Maier, as she tried to muster every ounce of emotion and fake guilt. Her friend, more than happy to be party of the charade. People who talk about abuse for the first time, usually don't do so on camera. The fact these scenes were so prominent, shows that they felt wronged that they were not rewarded. Maloof on the other hand, seems to disappear from the documentary during this part, almost hiding away from the fact, he went from complete praise, to even making money off of her, to destroying her personal legacy. He almost mentions the family of boys taking care of her rent, as an afterthought. Her burial spot, never shown, yet a video of her
